Citation for Heroism
Phillip Daniels, a member of Padgett-Webb Squadron 17 Sons of The American Legion and his friend Tyler Powell, distinguished themselves through extraordinary heroism on the evening of July 26, 2016 in East Dublin, Georgia. Phillip Daniels and Tyler Powell rescued their neighbor Gene Kosten from his burning house located at 807 Stumps Way just off St Charles Way, East Dublin, GA. Gene Kosten is a US Army Veteran and a member of the Georgia Army National Guard.
On the night of July 26, 2017 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Phillip Daniels, Tyler Powell, Deseree McSweeny and Jenna Waldun were hanging out on the Walduns front porch when they heard an explosion. That is when Phillip and Tyler went into action. Phillip and Tyler were able to get Gene to safety until first responders arrived. The first responders arrived on the scene a few minutes later. Gene was flown by Air to the Augusta Burn Unit in Augusta, GA with burns over 60% of his body. Daniels was treated at the scene by EMT for minor smoke inhalation. Phillip Daniels, 18 years old, son of Angela Daniels a US Army Veteran and Legionnaire/Auxiliary members of Padgett-Webb Post 17and Tyler Powell, friend knew the danger of going into a house on fire and risked their own life to save the life of a neighbor.
