The Atlanta VAMC will be hosting the Homeless Veterans Stand Down on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 7:30-3:30 pm. This will be our fifth year hosting Stand Down on the grounds of the Atlanta VA Medical Center.

Obituary for Martha Thurmond
Martha Thurmond, an American Patriot, passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside Tuesday, April 29, 2014. She was born August 21, 1931 in Atlanta, the daughter of the late Mr. Eugene Gilbert Brooks and the late Mrs. Hazel Collier Puckett Brooks. She was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW, and volunteered at the Veterans Administration. Hobbies included playing bingo and watching Jeopardy. She was of the Presbyterian Faith.

Obituary for Edward L. “Spanky” Van Houten, Jr.
Patriotic, honorable, giving; these words depict the character of Ed Van Houten. For years, Ed was active in serving the Village of Bellville, and was instrumental in organizing Bellville’s Memorial Day and Fourth of July Parades. His efforts made “The Valley” a better place to live. Without pain or discomfort, Edward L. “Spanky” Van Houten, Jr. peacefully passed away at home on Sunday morning March 16, 2014. He was 61.

Funeral arrangements for Past Dept. Cmdr. Al Smith
Mr. William A. "Al" Smith, Sr., age 69, passed away early Monday at Candler Hospital. He was a native and longtime resident of Thunderbolt, GA and retired as a Captain from Savannah Fire and Emergency Services. Mr. Smith was a decorated Vietnam Veteran First Cav. and was a recipient of Chatham County Veteran of the Year. He was Vice Chairman of National Homeless and Unemployment Commission, Past American Legion Post 184 Legionnaire of the Year, Past Chef de Gare, and Past Commander of American Legion Post 184. Mr. Smith was a representative of Chatham County VAVS for the Charleston VA Hospital, Chatham County Past Chairman Veteran's Council, First District Commander of Department of Georgia, and State Commander of Department of Georgia. He was a past member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, Thunderbolt Men's Club, Chairman of Blessing of the Fleet, member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, member of Anavictus Honor Guard of Canada, and the Marine Rescue Squad 3A. Mr. Smith was a Past President of Local 574 IAFF, was an American Legion Liaison for Congressman Jack Kingston, and Director/Staff Department of Georgia Boys State. He was a member of the Thunderbolt Baptist Church and a volunteer with the Thunderbolt Fire Department.

In 2013, the Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta, Inc. (GVDPA) celebrates 32 years of positively impacting Georgia Veterans and the community with its mission - to honor, support and thank all who have served and are currently serving in our military. We accomplish these goals by hosting the Nation's largest Veterans Day Parade, promoting the truth that freedom is not free and exhibiting the belief of freedom through service.

FEMA and the Ad Council Unveil New Ready Kids PSAs
Sixty percent of Americans self-reported they currently do not have a family emergency plan in case of a natural disaster or other emergency, according to a 2013 national survey conducted by the Ad Council. To encourage parents to engage their children (ages 7-12) in a conversation about preparing for emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ad Council unveiled a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) as part of their Ready Kids campaign. The PSAs are launching in advance of the tenth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM).
